I have had two safaris with Makasa Safaris owned by the Norton family of Lusaka Zambia. In 2023 there was a 10 day buffalo and plains game hunt and in 2024 a 14 day buffalo, sable and Kafue lechwe hunt with other assorted plains game. Of my six African safaris as well as arctic and northern Australian safaris, the two with Makasa were the best. First the two ph’s, Roland and Alister Norton, father and son, are skilled and experienced in their profession. They do not make unrealistic promises and tell you things just to get your hopes up. You know what is likely, what is possibly achievable and what is not likely to be achievable. They will get you the best quality trophy they possibly can, assuming you do your part. I found them easy going, honest and very ethical. In the two areas I hunted, the buffalo numbers in Nyakolwe were great with herds of 500+ buff on multiple occasions and cheeky elephants every day. The other area, Nsonga, had sable so big it would sound like I was exaggerating, great Defassa waterbuck, hartebeest, greater kudu, hippo, croc and lots of duikers, and this was free range, no high fence. The equipment is well maintained, the staff is competent and the food of high quality.

You could do a lot worse than to spend your time and money with Makasa safaris, just don’t book my slot for 2025 because I’m going back..
